How to obtain a Michigan Medical Marijuana ID

Feb 10, 2021

Obtaining a medical marijuana ID in Michigan requires a few steps and may be overwhelming for first-time medical patients. We want to help you every step of the way on your journey to relief, so we created this useful guide to help you understand the steps needed to obtain your Michigan Medical Marijuana card.

1. You must be 21+ or have a designated caregiver

The first thing to keep in mind is that you must be 21+. Patients 18 and younger with chronic or severe symptoms or illnesses must have a designated caregiver.

2. Obtain a diagnosis

To qualify for a medical marijuana card, one must be diagnosed by a doctor as having a ‘debilitating medical condition”.

Debilitating medical conditions in Michigan include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Cachexia/Wasting Syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Nail Patella
  • Seizures
  • Severe & Chronic Pain
  • Severe & Persistent Muscle Spasms
  • Severe Nausea
  • Any other medical condition approved by the Department of Community Health

Michigan works a little differently than most medical cannabis states. You must have an established relationship with your Michigan physician before obtaining a diagnosis. Multiple visits are

needed to ensure a diagnosis of a debilitating medical condition.

Find a list of physicians in your area.

3. A completed application form

You can apply for a medical card through the Michigan government website.

For your application you will need:

  • A copy of a Michigan government-issued ID, the most common being a driver’s license. You may also use a copy of your Michigan voter registration as a form of ID.
  • A physical certification form from your doctor along with their name and physician’s license number.
  • A $40 application fee payable by electronic check or debit/credit card.

Keep in mind that the process can take about a month. Your card will be valid for 24 months.
